More than Recycling: NEVEON Mattress at the Technical Museum Vienna

The new special exhibition "More than Recycling" at the Technical Museum Vienna impressively demonstrates how the circular economy works and can change our lives. An innovative exhibit from NEVEON, a mattress made from recycled foam, is part of this exhibition. This mattress symbolizes the progress we have made at NEVEON in the field of recycling and sustainable product development. The exhibition invites us to rethink our relationship with resources and shows that sustainable product design is already a reality today.

Circular Economy as a Common Goal

As a globally operating industrial company, our parent company Greiner, and thus also we at NEVEON, see the circular economy not only as an ecological imperative but as a strategic success factor. With the Greiner-wide sustainability strategy Blue Plan, we emphasize the high importance of the circular economy. Concrete measures such as the increased use of secondary materials and the consistent reduction of landfilled waste worldwide underscore this path – and show how responsibility and innovation go hand in hand.

The circular economy is a central theme of the exhibition and shows how important it is to use resources efficiently and minimize waste. NEVEON demonstrates with the recycled mattress that it is possible to produce high-quality products from recycled materials without compromising on quality. What was once considered waste becomes a resource at NEVEON: new, fully-fledged mattresses with excellent lying comfort are created from recycled polyol – obtained from old mattresses.

NEVEON Mattress: Sustainability Meets Innovation

The NEVEON mattress exemplifies forward-looking circular economy: it consists of foam with an 80% recycling content in the polyol component – obtained from old mattresses through an innovative chemical process developed by BASF. This repolyol foam is combined with foam made from mass-balanced raw materials according to the REDcert2 certificate. The completely adhesive-free construction makes the mattress not only free of foreign materials but also particularly easy to disassemble – ideal for efficient recycling. The result is a mattress concept that sets standards: probably the world's most sustainable foam mattress. These mattresses have already been used in the Business Hotel René Bohn of BASF's gastronomy.

Interactive Experiences and In-Depth Insights

The exhibition "More than Recycling" runs until the end of 2026 and offers alternative approaches, interactive experiences, and in-depth insights into the challenges and opportunities of the circular economy. Visitors have the opportunity to experience the various aspects of recycling up close and understand how innovative technologies and processes can help conserve our environment. NEVEON shows with the recycled mattress that sustainable solutions are not only possible but also necessary to protect our environment and conserve resources.

With our mattress concept, we were able to achieve several advances that were hardly conceivable before. 80% of the polyol used was recovered for the first time by our partner BASF in the best quality from mattresses that were previously used and disposed of. The foaming of such material could be carried out by NEVEON for the first time on a full production scale. Last but not least, the foam in the upper layer of the mattress is characterized by an unusually low carbon footprint and is also industry-leading in the durability of the product.

Roland Krämer, VP Group R&D Innovation Excellence at NEVEON

It is a great honor for us that our repolyol mattress has a place in the Technical Museum Vienna. With the high recycling content of 80% in the polyol, we have reached an incredible milestone and taken a step towards the future of recycling. We are all the more pleased that the topic of polyurethane recycling is now being made accessible to more people in the museum.
